BL!NDMAN plays MOONDOG

[drums] + [sax] + Eric Sleichim

Some artists are so unique it’s hard to pin down or compare them. Moondog is such an artist. The blind Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916 – September 8, 1999), known professionally as Moondog, was an American composer, performing musician, theorist, poet, and inventor of several musical instruments. Largely self-taught as a composer, he was inspired by Latin and Native American music, street sounds, jazz and classical music.

His contrapunctal and strongly rhythmic technique influenced, among others, minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. He has been active for more than half a century and the performance of his works ranges from symphony orchestras to Janis Joplin to Julie Andrews. With his tonal, traditional and melodic structures, he saw himself as an outcast and an anomaly. His work includes orchestral and small combo compositions, poetry, theology, and theory.

The alienating work of Moondog is an extremely inspiring world with which the BL!NDMAN set to work. BL!NDMAN has developed a program that explicitly explores the interfaces between jazz and classical music.
